Optimising Travel eSIM Sales: Insights and Strategies for Airlines

Misha Jonathan Kogan

In today’s world, the demand for eSIM data packages while travelling abroad is ever-growing. According to research by Kaleido Intelligence, the travel eSIM market is poised for exponential growth in the coming years. It is predicted that retail spending on travel eSIM services will experience a staggering 500% increase between 2023 and 2028.

To effectively meet this need, Simtex has conducted extensive research to determine the optimal timing for offering roaming data solutions to travellers. By understanding traveller behaviour and preferences, airlines can enhance customer engagement and drive sales of eSIM essential roaming data packages.

Insights from Data Analysis

Simtex analysed booking data from eSIM purchases since 2019 made by our airlines and travel partners to uncover patterns in the timing of acquiring roaming data. The analysis revealed that:

  • 72% of travellers purchase roaming data within 24 hours before departure.
  • 10% make purchases within 48 hours of departure.
  • 18% secure roaming data more than 48 hours before departure.

Key Takeaways

  1. Strategic Timing: Airlines should offer roaming data services around the period of confirming travel plans, ideally between check-in time and boarding time.
  2. Avoid Premature Offers: Presenting roaming data options too early in the travel planning may not resonate with travellers.

Successful Implementation

By implementing these insights, airlines can significantly enhance their sales of roaming data packages. For instance, one partner experienced a threefold increase (300%) in roaming data sales by strategically adjusting the timing of their offers.

Best Practices for Airlines

Based on these findings, Simtex recommends focusing on key touchpoints during the travel journey:

  1. Manage My Booking (MMB): Present roaming data offers within the MMB interface for maximum visibility and convenience.

  2. Check-In Flow: Integrate roaming data promotions seamlessly into the online check-in process to capture travellers’ attention as they prepare for their journey.
  3. Dedicated Email 48 Hours Pre-Departure: Send targeted emails to travellers 48 hours before departure, reminding them to secure roaming data for their trip.

By strategically aligning eSIM roaming data offers with traveller behaviour and preferences, airlines can enhance customer engagement, increase conversion rates, and ultimately improve the overall travel experience. Simtex’s insights provide a roadmap for airlines to optimise their sales of essential roaming data services, ensuring travellers stay connected seamlessly during their journeys.
